Columbia Estuary Report 10/3/1999

Up to 30 LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been at the shorebird flats SJCR.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was flushed from the dunes and driftwood on
Saturday afternoon.

Fall migration has shifted to fall arrivals. A HERMIT THRUSH was
seen by the Lower Columbia Birders on the bike path Saturday.
RUBY-CROWNED KINGLETS and YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS have arrived in
winter numbers. There are plenty of AMERICAN PIPITS around including
one that flew over my house. Migrating AMERICAN KESTRELS, SHARP-
SHINNED and COOPER'S HAWKS were also seen. An OSPREY coming in
off the ocean was at the SJCR today.

There are still a few warblers about, however. At least 4 COMMON
YELLOWTHROATS were still in the willows near parking lot C.
YELLOW WARBLERS and BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS can still be
found in small numbers.

Mike Patterson The common view of science is that it is a sort of machine
Astoria, OR for increasing the race's store of dependable facts.
mpatters at oregonvos.net It is that only in part; in even larger part
it is a machine for upsetting undependable facts.
