Sunday, October 10th
Blackie Spit was the locations of a LONG-BILLED CURLEW, a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and 2 late OSPREY.
PARASITIC JAEGERS were again observed off the Iona Jetty with a count of 5.
Also reported from the Jetty were 15 COMMON TERN, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR and a
SHEARWATER SPECIES bird, which could not be positively identified due to
distance and weather conditions. From the ponds and other parts of Iona
Park came reports of 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, 3 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, a
SWAMP SPARROW and a PALM WARBLER.
October 9th
On a boat excursion off Iona 25 PARASITIC JAEGERS, a LONG-TAILED JAEGER and
14 RHINOCEROS AUKLETS were observed. From the Iona Jetty came a report of
200 SURFBIRDS and a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER.
From a boat trip to West Vans Grebe Islets came the sighting of 200
SURFBIRDS, and a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER.
A large migration of over 100 raptors, made up of 10 species was observed
to the north of West Vans Fisherman's cove looking towards Cypress Bowl.
Highlights were a male NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a GOLDEN EAGLE and 10 TURKEY
VULTURES.
From Point Roberts came the report of a HEERMAN'S GULL.
Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were seen at Jericho Park on the lawn west of the
sailing club.
October 8
This was the last day the juvenile LITTLE STINT was reported. The bird was
observed between 7:00 and 9:00 AM in the northeast sewage pond at Iona.
Also at Iona were a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, 3 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and
a SWAMP SPARROW. There were 15 PARASITIC JAEGERS, 38 COMMON TERNS, and 4
LAPLAND LONGSPURS observed from the Iona Jetty.
October 7
The juvenile LITTLE STINT was seen at around 10:30 in the morning on the
northeast sewage pond at Iona. Also in the ponds were a BUFF-BREASTED and a
SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER.
There was also a SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER at Reifel in the west field.
Out of town the 2 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS continue to be seen in Blaine
Washington below Peace Portal Drive.
October 6
The juvenile Little Stint was seen at the end of the south jetty at Iona
Island along with 300 SURFBIRDS. At the Iona ponds were a BUFF-BREASTED,
BAIRD'S and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.
Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were seen in Jericho Park at the beginning at
the pipeline trail and the west pond.
