Columbia Estuary Report - 10/11/1999

At least 3 AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVERS have been at the SJCR
for the past several days. A single PACIFIC GOLDEN PLOVER
was with an AMERICAN today at high tide. Other shorebirds
in and out of the flats area include BLACK-BELLIED PLOVER,
MARBLED GODWIT, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and a few PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS. There have also been plenty of AMERICAN PIPITS
and at least one LAPLAND LONGSPUR.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was at the SJCR again today. For those who
think it's early here are some arrival dates for Ft Stevens:
11-4-1989
10-7-1990
10-12-1991
10-25-1992
10-6-1993
10-18-1997

WHITE-FRONTED GEESE have been going over the estuary in small
flocks. A single CASPIAN TERN was on Youngs Bay Friday 10-8.
There are still quite a BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLERS around
and a single YELLOW WARBLER was mist-netted at the Ft Stevens
banding station.

Mike Patterson The common view of science is that it is a sort of machine
Astoria, OR for increasing the race's store of dependable facts.
mpatters at oregonvos.net It is that only in part; in even larger part
it is a machine for upsetting undependable facts.
