Just discovered Tweeters and it's great! Does anybody
out there have an answer/observation...

Since I work I'm not home alot but still manage to see
Pileateds on our property (1 acre)at least several
times during the year, also hear them in the
surrounding woods even if don't spot them. Suet
feeder is out most of the time, and we frequently see
Downies, Flickers, and the occasional Hairy on the
suet feeder. However, never, ever have seen Pileated
on a feeder--only on trees, stumps, etc. natural
things around the yard (and this never ever includes a
lifetime of living here and seeing them occasionally
from childhood on).
BUT, on Monday (18th)I got pretty excited because a
Pileated was checking out Doug-fir near garage (as
usual) and next thing it was hanging upside down on
suet feeder under garage eve (not usual!) and stayed
there gorging for about 5 minutes (until squirrel
startled him).

Is this unusual or has anyone else seen this pretty
often, and I just happen to have seen shy Pileateds
all my life? If it is not unusual, does anyone have a
guess why I haven't observed it before now?

Also, had a grand, clear view of my first Cooper's
Hawk dining on fresh squirrel in alder in back yard, a
week or so ago. Thanks,
