Tweeters, and other Green Lake regulars, have likely noticed the frequent
presence of as many as four Western Painted turtles; basking in the
recent sunshine on a log just a few feet from the west shore of Green
Lake. Treees shade this log early in the afternoon, and the turtles
disappear. Because the log is very close to the path, sudden movements of
walkers and others also cause the turtles to quickly submerge.

Last Sunday, 17 October, some volunteers helped Martin Mueller locate,
move and anchor four additional logs in the waterlilly area about 50 to
75 yards south of the popular "turtle log." While turtles have been
observed on the original log every day this past week, it was not until
this (Sunday) afternoon that one of the larger turtles was spotted
basking on the most visible of the four new logs. This log is easy to
spot from the path, yet just far enough from shore that the turtle was
not fazed by those enjoying his presence, and by those of us taking his
photo. It also receives sun late into the afternoon.

Martin feels that some of the shore birds may soon be using these logs as
well. Kepp your eyes peeled!
