Dear Birders:

The attached report of a BEAN GOOSE in Whitehorse-- the first for
the Yukon Territory-- may be of interest to some of you. Sounds like
it could be quite a fall, with a Bean Goose in Whitehorse, a
RED-THROATED PIPIT near Victoria, and a EURASIAN DOTTEREL at Ocean
Shores, Wash.
If any of you want to subscribe to YBC BIRDS (for Yukon Bird
Club), send a message to Cameron Eckert at ceckert at yknet.yk.ca and
ask to be added to the list. There are only 1 or 2 messages a week, as
a rule, but they include lots of interest to those of us who are
curious about bird happenings in the Great White North.

An adult BEAN GOOSE was an absolutely stunning find in Whitehorse on
Saturday October 23. Reports indicated that "a goose" (likely this
goose)
had been in the area for about a week. This is a first Yukon record,
and an
exceptional rarity by North American standards.

Please view the Bean Goose from the road -- and do NOT approach the
bird on
foot. It is quite wary and easily flushed. As well, the recent snow
cover
will likely be stressful for this bird.

Please report any further sightings of the goose immediately to
Cameron
Eckert (ceckert at yknet.yk.ca) or call 667-4630.

The NORTHERN HAWK OWL, first reported from Mountain View Drive (where
it
crosses McIntyre Creek) last week was at its alternate location on
Saturday
23 October. It was seen through the day at McIntrye Creek and the
Alaska
Hwy -- at the corner of the Fish Lake Road and the Alaska Hwy.

A boat trip around the south end of Lake Laberge on Saturday October
23
turned up a host of interesting waterbirds including one COMMON and
one
RED-THROATED LOON. Migration is still underway!

Very exciting was a report on October 21 (I think) of an apparent
adult
Kumlien's Iceland Gull at the Whitehorse landfill. To date, there are
only
two documented Yukon records for Iceland Gull.
