Most of this weeks action was again reported from Mann Lake, east of
Lewiston, Nez Perce Co, ID. On Oct 16 and 17 several birders, including
myself, saw some good birds, including the adult female SURF SCOTER which
has been present over a week, up to 3 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, an AMERICAN
GOLDEN-PLOVER, a EURASIAN WIGEON, 8 to 24 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS, a lone
ROSS'S GOOSE, a single DUNLIN, plus the usual assortment of PECTORAL,
BAIRD'S, and WESTERN SANDPIPERS. Also there on Oct 16 were 17 BONAPARTE'S
GULLS and a few HORNED GREBES. And a late OSPREY. Thanks to Charles Swift
and Deb Beutler for forwarding along their sightings. To get to Mann Lake
from the north end of Lewiston, take US 12 across the Clearwater River and
immediately after crossing the bridge, take the first left toward East
Lewiston. Turn left onto East Main Street and follow it several blocks to
the blinking yellow light and Lapwai (aka Lindsey Creek) Road. Turn right
onto Lapwai and at the "Y" stay right on Lindsey Creek. Follow Lindsey
until it deadends at Grelle. Turn left on Grelle, and just after Grelle
makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left on Powers Ave and follow it 1.3 to the
dead end and the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.

Two BOREAL OWLS were heard and seen by Mike and MerryLynn Denny in
northeastern OR on Oct 8. To get to the birds, take Mill Creek Road from
Walla Walla, Walla Walla Co. WA, which turns into Tiger Canyon Road in
Umatilla Co. OR, which turns into FS Road 65 in Wallowa Co. OR, which
intersects with FS Road 64 (aka Skyline Drive). From the intersection, go
north another 0.6 mile. OR DeLorme 87, A-5 just right of the crease near
the word "Umatilla."

Craig Corder and Judy Stevens found some good birds in Grant Co WA on Oct
16. Highlights were 3 female-plumaged SURF SCOTERS at Lake Lenore north of
Soap Lake near WA 17 milepost 81. WA DeLorme 68, A-4, right at the top of
the page. At the Cooley City sewage ponds they spotted 15 BONAPARTE'S GULLS
and a single MEW GULL. WA DeLorme 85, CD-6. And finally, a Northern
Saw-whet Owl was roosting at Summer Falls State Park (about 8 miles south
of Cooley City) in the Russian-olives behind the restroom. WA DeLorme 85,
D-6 right at the bottom of the page.

A single WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was a one-day occurrence on Moscow Mt in
Latah Co ID on Oct 17. The bird was at Tom Besser's feeder.

A single NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found Oct 19 about 5 miles south of
Othello Adams Co WA by Randy Hill and Bob Flores. The bird was along WA 24
near milepost 75, near CJ Cubers, just north of the Franklin Co line. WA
DeLorme 53, BC-7.
Another NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD was found in extreme northern Idaho near the
Canadian border on Oct 18 by Rich Del Carlo. Take US 95 north from Bonners
Ferry to Mt. Hall Jct. Continue north to County Road 51 (the old highway)
and the first county road on the right is 51A. The bird was in a row of
hawthorn and aspen along this road. ID DeLorme 49, A-4.

BLUE JAYS I received several reports of Blue Jays. Two are at Rich Del
Carlo's feeder along Selkirk Road in Bonner Co ID. One has been along West
Eagle Creek near Murray, Shoshone Co ID since Oct 1 according to Cindy
Langlitz and Grant Tester. Another was in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on
Fernan Hill on Oct 17, according to Roger Young. Charles Swift reports one
near the corner of 7th and Logan on the southeast side of Moscow, Latah Co
ID on Oct 17.

If you have any questions, give me a call 208.883.0943.
