Wow, this is great. Just a couple of weeks ago, told
my Dad about seeing some unusual crow behavior several
times in past 5 years, around our neighborhood. Very
similar to what you describe; in different
trees/locations each time. Couldn't see any large
raptor, owl, cat, etc. or anything that would incite
them. Crows were flying in by the dozens and the noise
was amazing. Lived here awhile and know what they do
when they are angry at a cat, etc, this was quite
different and quite astounding to HEAR, let alone see.
Each time it in my neighborhood it took place in the
top branches of 100+-foot fir tree. (It's pretty
wooded here near Bridle Trails State Park)

My Dad responded with this story of his own (lives in
SW Seattle):
"Your story about the crows was an amazing
coincidence. About two months ago (was that when yours
happened too?) mother and I were sitting in the family
room when we heard this terrible crow racket - like
none we had ever heard before. We looked out and
directly in front of our house (just slightly to the
WNW) there was the biggest swarm of crows I have ever
seen. They were milling around, like an angry mob,
landing in trees close to each other, then after a
bit, taking off again to circle around and land in the
same tree or a tree nearby. All the time they were
hollering loudly. It was both fascinating and a little
alarming - there were so many of them and they seemed
so frenzied. We both said "wow - THE BIRDS" (Alfred
Hitchcock)... Crows must on occasion have rendezvous
or something."

Lady at local birdfood store said she heard that crows
have "wakes" (in a manner of speaking, for lack of
better word) and so if that is true, could it be some
response to a death in the crow flock hierarchy??
Don't know much about crows, so I'm just as interested
as you are, whether any other Tweeters can shed light
on this???
