Lydia was inquiring about densities of hawks; earlier this month I went to
Cape May NJ with Kris Baker, and in just a few hours we saw perhaps nearly a
thousand sharp shinned hawks, kestrels, ospreys, peregrines, merlins, and
harriers. I had heard about the place for many years, and finally made the
pilgrimage.
We heard that a few days earlier, observers saw 5000 kestrels in a day, and
350,000 monarch butterflies in an hour. It's an amazing place!
Shortly afterwards we drove all the way back to Seattle, and Cape May stood
out well among the many trip highlights.
