I was interested reading Michael Hobbs' account of the interaction between
the Black-backed and Hairy Woodpeckers. I had just read the following in The
Birder's Handbook (p. 354) in the piece on Black-backs: "Agressive displays
with Hairy Woodpeckers; oft use complex of wing spreading and
scream-rattle-snarl calls."
