Narbeck Wetland Sanctuary is practically in my backyard. It has been
under development for several years and has just finally opened the end
of July this summer. It is a 50 acre park developed in conjunction with
the Snohomish County Airport. Snohomish County currently owns the
property but it should be turned over to the City of Everett soon.
It has a new parking lot, Restroom facilities (which I haven't found
open yet), a 1.5 mile perimeter trail taking you around the natural
wetland and through various wooded areas including evergreens and
cottonwoods and it has a newly constructed boardwalk winding through the
newest area of the park. What I mean by the newest area is that this
area used to be a field but they have moved earth and changed water
patterns in an attempt to turn this field into an extension of the
wetlands. This is the area in which I have found the Green Herons.
To get to the Wetlands, take I-5 North, get off at exit 189 (West 526,
Mukilteo). Take the second exit to Seaway Blvd. Go straight through
two lights. At approximately .9 miles, at the third light turn right
and you will be in the Parking Lot.
I have begun compiling a bird list for this park and I would
appreciate receiving bird sitings that others compile.
My last visit, August 19th, I stayed only in the boardwalk section of
the park. I saw, much to my chagrine, 26 Canada Geese. Also seen were
Song Sparrow feeding young, Green Heron, Am Crow, Marsh Wren,
Black-capped Chickadee, Barn Swallow, Belted Kingfisher, Willow
Flycatcher, American Robin, Northern Flicker, House Finch, Starlings,
American Goldfinch, Cedar Waxwing and Swainson's Thrush. Also there
were four Buck Deer, one was a Two-point, the other three were Spikes.
On other visits I've had Killdeer, Spotted Sandpiper, Great Blue Heron,
Rufous Hummingbird etc. Its been a fun place for a short birding day
and I hope it continues to be a good birding place.
