Hal Opperman called me about 7 pm Thurs. to report that he (and party) had
seen a Buff-breasted Sandpiper on the s. side of the pond on Damon Pt.,
towards the w. end, about 6 pm. He said that he had called details into the
birdbox, along with his other sightings.

My wife and I got down to the pond about 7:30, and found the Buff-breasted all
right, standing with one other bird: a juvenile Ruff! The Ruff is in a
plumage seldom seen here and could be mistaken for an overly tall Pectoral, or
even a Sharp-tailed. When it flies, however, showing its rump, its identity
is obvious.

What's next? Bring on the Dotterel!

P.S. I attempted to send this message at 8:10 pm Thurs., but our telephone
exchange's connection to the world has gone out (again!). Anyone coming down
here should bring a cell phone (which may not work here, either), and pray
they don't need 911 or an operator, or to be in touch with anyone outside of
the Copalis exchange.
