Sightings for Saturday September 04th

Two LEWIS' WOODPECKERS were at Grant Narrows Pitt Lake this morning. The
birds were observed high in trees about three quarters of a kilometer along
the nature dike trail just before the woods open up.

The WILLET was once again on the south side of the base of the Tswwassen
ferry jetty.

Fourty-eight CASPIAN TERNS, 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, and 1 BRANT were in the
vicinity of the wetland reclammation area.

COMMON TERNS are moving through our area in large numbers now, 100 were
noted at Crescent Beach. One LONG-BILLED CURLEW and PURPLE MARTINS were at
Blackie Spit.

Along the north shore of Bounday Bay near the mansion west to the foot of
96th sreet were 1 MARBLED GODWIT, and in ovew flight 10 HORNED LARKS.


September 03rd

At Maplewood Flats were 4 PURPLE MARTIN, 5 OSPREY and a Black Bear!!! near
the pond. Visitors to our are warned that bears are sometimes encountered
in and near forested areas. Use common sense and do not approach the
animal.


September 02nd

A juvenile STILT SANDPIPER was seen at the north east pond of Iona along
with good numbers of PECTORAL and BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.

Three HORNED LARKS, 4 PARASITIC JEAGERS and a juvenile PEREGRINE FALCON were
all seen from the Iona south jetty.

Nine PURPLE MARTINS were reported in over flight in the 5800 block Sumas St.
Burnaby and an OSPREY was working the Fraser River beneath the Patelo
Bridge.


September 01st

There has been no relocation of yesterday's SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER.

A juvenile HUDSONIAN GODWIT was observed between 2:00 pm and 4:30 pm at
Blackie Spit. Aslo at Blackie were 2 GREEN HERONS and a very vocal PURPLE
MARTIN.

>From Beach Grove Lagoon came reports of 4 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, 3 SEMIPALMATED
PLOVERS, a PECTORAL SANDPIPER and close up views of 20 COMMON TERNS near the
pump house.

Two birders hoping for something more exotic at Beach Grove were surprised
when a SANDHILL CRANE flew in for a brief visit.

The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN is still in residence at Roberts Bank.
Meanwhile, Iona's south jetty was the local for the first LAPLAND LONGSPUR
of the season as well as a HORNED LARK, 2 BLACK TURNSTONES, and 58 COMMON
TERNS. Three PEREGRINE FALCONS were seen at various Iona locations.


August 31st

Several observers have reported a juvenile SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER, the first
of the fall migration at Beach Grove Lagoon, Tsawwassen.

>From Iona, a STILT SANDPIPER was seen at the south west pond. Five HORNED
LARKS were at the first shelter at the south jetty, and also reported from
the south jetty were 2 PARASITIC JEAGERS. Six PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 6
BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS were observed near the mansion at the foot of 96th st
though a PEREGRINE FALCON kept shorebird numbers generally low.

Twenty two SEMI-PALMATED PLOVERS could still be found at Beach Grove. Two
PURPLE MARTINS and a GREEN HERON could be found at Blackie Spit and a check
at Serpentine Fen produced 8 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS.


August 30th

The cool wet weather resulted in a significant fallout of small passerines
throughout the region and high numbers of warblers tallied at Burnaby
Mountain Park included 25 TOWNSEND'S, 20 WILSON'S, 20 BLACK-THROATED GRAYS,
and 10 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. Also present were 2 OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHERS
and a WESTERN WOOD PEEWEE.

The banding station on Iona Island also noted a strong movement of warblers
including YELLOW, WILSON'S and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS as well as one of the
fall's first LINCOLN'S SPARROWS.

In other sightings 4 PURPLE MARTINS and an OSPREY were seen in Deer Lake and
up to 4 PARASITIC JEAGERS were observed with COMMON TERNS and CASPIAN TERNS
were observed at Point Roberts.

A GREAT HORNED OWL was heard calling from trees in the 2500 block of 149th
st in south Surrey.


August 29th

A FORK-TAILED STORM PETREL was seen off the tip of Iona's south jetty during
the height of the storm shortly after day break. The bird was seen for just
a few minutes before flying off in the direction of Point Roberts.

Other birds in the area at the same time were 4 PARASITIC JEAGERS, a
FRANKLIN'S GULL, 4 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and a RED KNOT which was seen on
the road way.

At the Tswwassen ferry terminal were the following: 30 BLACK TURNSTONES, a
RUDDY TURNSTONE and a WILLET was at the base of the Tswwassen jetty.

A RED KNOT and an AMERICAN GOLDEN PLOVER were near the mansion at the foot
of 96th st.

The AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN is still at Robert's Bank.
