I planned to spend Labor Day birding up the Gorge, but was stalled in
heading out when I awoke with literally hundreds of birds in the trees
around our home in Western Skamania County. I estimated that there were
200 AMERICAN ROBINS in the Cascara Trees along with 100 WESTERN TANAGERS,
20 BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAKS, and 75 CEDAR WAXWINGS. Present in smaller
numbers were SWAINSON'S THRUSH, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, TOWNSEND'S
WARBLER, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, AND MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER. Several
flocks of EVENING GROSBEAKS flew over while I stood on our deck. I've
experienced fallouts in the Dry Tortugas, Florida, at High Island, Texas,
and at Higbee Beach, New Jersey, for sheer numbers this matched those
occasions but without the diversity of species. I like birding when there
are so many birds around you that it is hard to look at them all.
