I assume the location was somewhere in Western Washington??
"Normal" nesting time for most grebes is indeed somewhat earlier for the
Pacific Northwest. In British Columbia eggs are produced between 20 April
and 11 August, 58 % from 16 May to 10 June (Campbell et al., 1990, The Birds
of British Columbia Vol. I, UBC Press). Here in Seattle, on Green Lake,
nesting (construction of first platforms) starts as early as late March and
in one year the last eggs of the season hatched in the first week of
October, with young dependent on their parents into November. But most young
are produced from late-May to early-August.
I therefor have to agree with Roger.
