Probably the same reason that we don't find other dead critters such as
rodents (which are numerous in most places) which is that they decompose w/
the help of many other organisms very quickly. I remember hearing about a
F&WS study done to see if pesticide poisoned birds could be detected in
suspected areas. A moderate size field was littered w/ bird corpses of
various sizes and within a day or 2 only a small percentage of the corpses
could be found w/ intensive searching.
