Subject: Article about Hybrids

The British weekly magazine 'New Scientist' published an article by
Martin Brookes in vol. 163, no. 2193 (3 July 1999), reprinted in Birding
World (UK) vol. 12 no. 8 (Aug. 1999), I think titled "Live and Let Live"
in the former; it is "The true Nature of Hybrids" in the latter.
Although I cannot find the text of the article on the web, 'New
Scientist' should be available in most major city and university
libraries.

The article writes about the changing opinion among leading-edge
biologists concerning the role of hybridization in evolution. It
includes a number of catchy statements that I dare not quote to those in
the audience who possibly might prefer to consider the whole article
'X-rated'. But for those of you interested in reading some
thought-provoking comments on (reasonably) modern species concepts, I
think you'll find it worth seeking out.
