North American Bird Conservation Initiative Vision Document Released

A document describing the North American Bird Conservation Initiative
(NABCI) in the United States was released today. The document was
developed by an interim committee with representatives from all four of
the major bird initiatives. The document explains the importance of
integrated bird conservation, describes each of the four initiatives and
how they can interact through common delivery regions, and outlines major
recommendations and funding needs. We have worked hard to develop the
U.S. Shorebird Plan in coordination with the other bird initiatives, and
NABCI will be a major part of our efforts to coordinate delivery of the
Plan. Please take the time to review this important document, which we
will cover in detail at the national conference as part of our discussions
on implementation of the Shorebird Plan. Comments will be taken on the
draft through January 18, 2000 (assuming we all survive Y2K).

National Conference Registration Deadline

Arrangements for the national conference in Bodega Bay are almost
complete. If you have requested housing or travel support, you should
have received the information recently. If you are planning to attend the
conference, and have not submitted a registration form, you need to do so
by September 17th. If you still need the form, it is available on our

Also, please be sure you have returned the transportation questionnaire by
September 17th so we can finalize transportation plans. The questionnaire

Staffing Changes

Candace Williams has completed her internship at Manomet. Many of you got
to know Candace over the phone as she handled many of the arrangements for
the upcoming conference, and can appreciate her good humor in the face of
deadlines and too much work. We are very grateful to Candace for her help
with the conference and on several parts of the plan. She will be at the
conference in October, and may be back to work with us for November!

Metta McGarvey will be handling the remaining conference planning. If you
have questions regarding the conference, you can reach Metta at

information.
