This is Kas Dumroese with the northern Idaho /
eastern Washington /
northeastern Oregon bird hotline.

Except for Cold Springs NWR in northeastern Oregon,
reports this week were mostly of the usual expected
shorebirds, in less than spectacular numbers....

Two first-winter plumaged SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHERS were at McNary NWR southeast of
Pasco, in Walla Walla County Washington on Sun
September 5, according to Stephen Lindsay. The
birds were not seen the next day. Also at McNary on
September 5 was a single BONAPARTE'S GULL, but
Denny Grandstand reports 3 birds on September 6,
along with a single STILT SANDPIPER. McNary NWR
is along US 12, about 6 miles south of Pasco.
Washington DeLorme 40, C1.

Just south of McNary at the Walla Walla River delta,
the only fairly decent bird of the week was a GREAT
EGRET seen on September 5 by Stephen Lindsay.
The delta is just north of the jct of US 12 and US
730. Park in the pullout opposite the entrance to the
park and take the well-worn path down to the delta.
Washington DeLorme 40, D1.

At Mann Lake, east of Lewiston, Nez Perce County,
Idaho, birders report all of the usual peeps, including
a few STILT SANDPIPERS. Seen most of the past
week were several SANDERLINGS and several
SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS. Dave Holick reports a
PRAIRIE FALCON was near the grain elevators on the
west side of the lake on September 6. Also flitting
around were a couple of SAY'S PHOEBES. Thanks to
Charles Swift and John & Amy Roberson for their reports.
To get there from the north end of Lewiston, take US 12
across the Clearwater River and immediately turn left
toward East Lewiston. At the exit, turn left onto East Main
Street and follow it a few blocks to the blinking yellow lights.
.. Turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek) Road, stay
right at the fork, and follow Lindsay Creek until it ends at
Grelle Avenue. Turn left on Grelle, and just after Grelle
makes a 20 mph right turn, turn left on Powers and go 1.3
miles to the reservoir. Idaho DeLorme 54, A1.

The largest number of shorebirds was at Cold Springs
NWR, Umatilla County, northeastern Oregon on September
6, according to Craig Corder and Judy Stevens. They saw
5 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 10 SEMIPALMATED
SANDPIPERS, 100 LEAST SANDPIPERS, 2000
WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 12 dowitchers, and 200
KILLDEER. Cold Springs NWR is about 5 miles southeast
of Umatilla. Oregon DeLorme 85, A8.

A pretty good Latah Co Idaho bird was a single
GRASSHOPPER SPARROW along my driveway, 5 miles
south of Moscow on Paradise Ridge, on Tuesday
September 7.
