Hi Tweets,

Following up on Gail's posting (who *cannot* be interested in Brown-headed
Cowbirds?), you might want also to check out an article by Joseph A.
Grzybowski and Craig M. Pease on an aspect of the same subject, in the new
issue of *Birding* (October 1999). Entitled "Cowbirds: villains or
scapegoats? Can we exclude control at roosts and feedlots?", this article
focuses on the controversy over whether broad-scale cowbird control is an
effective, or indeed an ethical, remedy for reducing nest parasitism of
declining songbird species. The authors' conclusion is that, based on
existing science, the option of including such measures as part of an
overall cowbird population-management program (coupled with songbird
habitat protection) should not be rejected out of hand. The main part of
the article is devoted to an analysis of the evidence--much of it less than
scientific, the authors contend--that underlies the debate over broad-scale
control of this species.
