Deer Mt. is the picturesque, 4000'+ peak that rises just behind the town of
Ketchikan. The trail is popular with locals and visitors. I seldom make it
to the top, but have fun trying. Yesterday as I was sitting at the "First
View Point," enjoying the incredible vista, a NORTHERN PYGMY OWL landed on
the top of a small snag, just a few yards from me and my companion at eye
level. It sat there for a long time, seemingly unconcerned about the
presence of two humans and a canine. We were finally the first to move on.
What a treat!
