For those interested ..........

What turned out to be a terrible August and the first part of September for
passerine movement through Iona Island BC, has in late September, become
very good. In general, the station has experienced a 33% decrease in
numbers of banded birds from last year but in the last 2 days of banding,
bird numbers have escalated to over 60 birds banded each day, and all pretty
much before 0900hrs.!

The following are the results over the last 2 days worth of effort:

Number of nets = 6
Total net hrs.banded = 52
Total number of species captured = 18
Number of individuals = 138
Number of birds plus retraps = 157
Number of species seen in area = 41

Number, and Species Banded over the two day interval:

1 Golden-crowned Kinglet
1 Ruby-crowned Kinglet
17 Audubon's Warblers
9 Myrtle Warblers
7 Unknown Yellow-rumped Warblers (hybrids)
2 Black-capped Chickadees (1) R
2 White-throated Sparrows
1 Oregon Junco
2 Orange-crowned Warblers (lutecens race)
2 Orange-crowned Warblers (orestra race)
2 American Goldfinch
2 Yellow Warblers
15 Lincoln Sparrows (5) R
7 Savannah Sparrows (1) R
24 Song Sparrows (5) R
21 Gamble's White-crowned Sparrows (3) R
11 House Finches
2 Spotted Towhees (2) R
1 Winter Wren
4 Common Yellowthroats
2 Sooty Fox Sparrows
1 Bewick's Wren (2) R

NB: (x) R = number of retraps

NOTES OF INTEREST:

I had a PEREGRINE FALCON fly over yesterday as well as captured 2
WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS (rare bird for the area), and had the first serious
movement of YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS. A BARN OWL was checking the nets out
yesterday AM in the woodlot.

I have had some people interested in coming out to visit. Please let me
know if you would be interested via email or phone because the area is
limited/restricted access.
