Hi there-

I am a graduate student at the University of Washington, researching great
blue heron colonies in King County, Washington. I am looking at population
trends over the past 20 years, current productivity levels, and the
factors affecting colony productivity (eagles, human disturbance, etc)

I am pretty sure that I know the locations of all of the colonies that are
currently active in the more urban portions of the county (the greater
Seattle area), but I'm not so sure about the possibility of colonies in
the more rural portions of King County.
I would greatly appreciate any information about colonies that I may be
missing!!-- those in rural King County and/or little-known colonies in
urban King County.
I am also interested in the locations of great blue
heron colonies in the rural areas surrounding greater Seattle (outside
the county is ok), to use as comparisons to those in the urban portions of
the county.

If you know of a location and general directions, please reply to me
directly- astabins at u.washington.edu
It would be best not to send locations to the general board- nesting
herons are very sensitive to disturbance, and a sudden increase in
spectators could disturb them. There are several colonies in Seattle that
are easy to view and accustomed to some disturbance- viewing them is
unlikely to cause problems. If you would like more info on these
tolerant colonies, let me know!

Thanks!
