I can recommend any of the following (listed alphabetically
by author).

Nehls, H.B. 1981. Familiar Birds of the Northwest. Portland
Audubon Society.
Not specifically targeted to children, but has only NW birds
eliminating potential mis-IDs.

Peterson, R.T. 1957. How to Know the Birds. Signet American, NY.
Probably more appropriate to children 12 and up.

Peterson, R.T. 1986. Peterson First Guides: Birds. Houghton-Mifflin.
Boston.
Trimmed downed composite of eastern and western guides.

Weidensaul, S. 1998. NAS First Field Guide Birds. Scholastic Inc. NY
Available at Costco, comprehensive guide and biology.

And leave at home picture books:

Aska, Warabe and David Day. 1992. Aska's Birds. Doubleday, NY.

Boulton, Rudyerd. 1933. Traveling with the Birds. M.A. Donohue and
Co. Chicago.

Henry, Marguerite. 1942. Birds at Home. M.A. Donohue and
Co. Chicago.

Porter, R.P. 1962. The Giant Golden Book of Birds. Golden Press, NY

Yolan, Jane. 1987. Owl Moon. Philomel Books, NY. (Cauldecott Winner)

Yolan, Jane. 1990. Bird Watch. Philomel Books, NY.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
