Excellent day; sunny, no wind. This was the site of a large, active
Great Blue Heron rookery in 1998 with more than 30 nests occupied by
heron pairs, most of which hatched 2-3 chicks each. Late in the heron
nesting season many double-crested cormorants began to forage in the
area and a few pairs took over some of the vacant heron nests. In
1999 herons successfully raised young in roughly one-half of the
nests despite fierce competition from cormorant pairs which
eventually occupied approximately one-half of all the nests. After
the 1999 heron nesting season ended virtually all nests were occupied
by cormorants. Today (4/7/00)heron were seen on only two of the 30+
nests; cormorant pairss occupied most of the others.
