Subject: Harris Sparrow still on Beacon Hill, quail

Hi All, Our Harris Sparrow is still around, and lately is visible most all
morning and early afternoon from our backyard, and this bird continues to
bully the Song Sparrows and the other zonotrichias. We have a number (now 7
plus) American Goldfinch that have been hanging around our thistle feeder
since it went up in midwinter. (How did the goldfinch find it in just one
day?)

In my purely speculative and nonscientific opinion California Quail don't have
an inbreeding problem but a juvenile/nest-predation problem in Seattle and I'd
sure put Crows, Cats and Gray Squirrels on the suspect list. That they are
declining here is confirmed in it's own soft way by the Christmas Counts, if
people recall Hal Opperman's post about the 99 tally to which he added some
insightful comments.

Congratulations to Kevin Li, Stan Kostka, and everyone who's putting up Purple
Martin boxes!
