To answer the question of where the goldfinches winter...They're at my feeder!
We feed an estimated number of 80+ American Goldfinches all winter long.

I too saw my first goldfinches of the year on Saturday. Two males at
my thistle feeder. My copy of "Birding in Seattle and King County"*
shows them in the area all year, although more abundant beginning in
May. So where are they during the winter months?

Just looked out the window and saw 3 male Goldfinches at one of my
feeders. This is my first sighting of the year.
