I walked into the Thomas Street Community Garden, the "Alpha" crow pair were
on the ground , "he" was offering "her" tasty morsels of cutworm( good
crow!) and then picking up beakfuls of the cedar chips we use on our side
paths and bringing them to the nest. Does the cedar offer any "bug"
protection for the young? Or was it just availble material? My vandalism
problem was also solved, it seems some-one/thing had been picking on a
topiary form one of the gardeners had been working on,each day the ivy was
dangling and moss missing from the wire frame, I "caught" the theives, a
pair of black cap chickadees were raiding the form , using the moss as
nesting material! They had been house hunting, one wanting the green
birdhouse, one making like a woodpecker, trying to peck through a knothole
on the side of the shed, ouch!
