Twenty years ago, when I was working at a nature center in
upstate New York, the plastic satellite feeders were brand
new. We purchased one to put outside the nature center's
windows. I took it out of the box, filled it with black oil
sunflower seed, then carried it outside. While I was
walking toward the tree where I wanted to hang the feeder, a
Black-capped Chickadee flew up, quickly assessed the bizarre
new feeder, darted into the hole and snatched a seed. This
was while I was walking, with the feeder dangling from a
short chain! Presumably it had never seen a feeder of this
type before.

I decided at that point that chickadees are smarter than I
am.
