This happened yesterday evening (4/16/00) at a small lake next to our
apartment. There were only two male bufflehead's and the one was chasing
other male for almost 20+ minutes. First few minutes the chase was going on
the surface of water. The other male was flying from one corner of the lake
to other. After getting tired he started going underwater and then
reappearing at a distance place almost after a minute. After the chaser male
realized this, the chaser male used the same technique to reach the other
male under water, so I guess chaser was trying to locate him under water.
After getting attacked few times, the other male circled the lake above
water (50 feet) for few minutes then after getting tired came down, the same
chasing repeated for few more times. Then finally, once again circled the
lake for some time and left the lake.

I did not understood what is the objective of this chase as there was no
female at that time. At the same lake previously I have seen up to 3
bufflehead pairs many times.
