Mike Cummings asked about Raven observations in Seattle and I sure don't have
any myself but my friend Rick Droker has described seeing a Raven at Seward
Park some years ago that was being mobbed and escorted away by "hundreds" of
crows.
I have assumed since hearing that story that crows have set up a "Maginot
line" against the Ravens and this is part of the reason we don't have Ravens
in the urban zone (I'm sure it has nothing to do with any kind of Raven
aesthetic preference for wilderness or rural areas).
Here's my prediction: increased sightings of Ravens in the city as Ravens
become another species, following the likes of Crow, Red Tail, and Bald Eagle,
to pioneer the urban zone--but they first may have to overcome the strenuous
and able objections of the massive urban crow population.
On another subject, when we put Chorus Frog tadpoles in our artificial pond
we didn't know if the habitat, being totally urban residential here on Beacon
Hill, would be sufficient for them. But they made it through the winter and
we're being serenaded every night now that it's April--Chorus Frog party time.
Party on!
Where are all the migrating Orange Crowned Warblers? It's been a terrible
April for them here on the hill.
