Mike West and I worked hard today trying to find birds on a rather quiet
morning. Many things seen by Mike in large numbers last week were missing or
all-but-missing today. Although we had 47 species, there were very few
individuals present of most species. Highlights:

Osprey Fantastic - fishing just N. of weir
Sharp-shinned Hawk One over Model Airplane field
Bald Eagle A pair of adults flirting west of the slough
California Quail One heard west of slough
Virginia Rail Many heard, none seen despite long looking
Hairy Woodpecker One male near Dog Central
Belted Kingfisher One female at weir
Rufous Hummingbird At least seven or eight
Cliff Swallow First of the year, on lake
Common Yellowthroat Abundant
Lincoln's Sparrow 1 at Rowing Club
Purple Finch 2 singing east of East Meadow

No Fox Sparrow, crowned sparrows, kinglets, few ducks (only 3 or 4 GWTE), etc.
Winter is over.

Also, I'll pass on some sightings from while I was in California last week:

Mike West, on Wednesday 4/12 (filling in for me) reported the following among
53 species seen:

Green Heron Seen flying down the slough.
Wood Duck One male flying down slough.
Northern Shoveler Three males flying over East field.
American Wigeon One male seen from L. Sammamish dock.
SURF SCOTER A pair on the lake!
Canvasback Drake seen from L. Sammamish dock.
Lesser Scaup Three seen from L. Sammamish dock.
California Quail One male, seen and heard, near slough
Mourning Dove Flew from field near pea patch, landed in trees nearby.
Chestnut-bck Chickadee Two in trees near road into dog parking lot.
Orange-crowned Warbler One at Dog Central.

Mike insists there were Surf Scoter, despite my attempts to get him to admit to
a hoax. He says he was absolutely stunned to see them, but they were plain as
day.

Jim McCoy, on Sunday 4/16 reported an orange-crowned warbler in a small tree
among the bushes along the southern extremity of the east meadow. Also had a
pair
of hermit thrushes, one of which was apparently harassed by a rufous
hummingbird. "Not much else of note".
