Lauren, One of the best places to go is Black Bird Island which is the city
park. It is FULL of catbirds, MacGillvarys and other warblers, lots of
songbirds, veeries, etc. Great birds along the water, spotted sandpiper, black
swifts(if they are here yet....Also going north of the city a bit, and going
down some side roads you can find flycatchers, and off rougher roads,
grouse(usually ruffed). You can easily spend the day at the island though if
you just want a chance to get to learn the different birds calls and songs, a
great area to study up on that; can't help on the black-backed, when you find
one let Me know....Vicki Biltz

Hi Tweets:
I will be in Leavenworth for two days this weekend, and will have a car.
Other than the fish hatchery and Sleeping Lady Lodge, I don't know where
to go birding! I am seeking suggestions. I will not want to travel
farther than 10-15 miles outside of Leavenworth, though (it is a
borrowed car!) Anyone know the area well and can suggest some
Parks/Roads that are good for birds? I would particularly love to see a
black-backed woodpecker. Also, any idea which (if any) migrants might be
coming through or spring arrivals might be returned? Is it too early
for a Calliope Hummingbird?

Thanks so much,
Lauren
