Greets --
I received a letter from my Florida birding buddy and good friend,
Marion. Among her written lines of fastastic canoe/birding trips, she made
mention of
". . . .and 2 or 3 small grebe-like diving birds with an orange-buffy erect
crest & a mottled charcoal gray and white body." She goes on to say, "I
looked under grebes but found nothing that really resembled them in any of
the 6 books -- they may have been a bit bigger than pied-bills."
They sound like infant grebes to me but Marion says they may be bigger
than pied-bills. Also, if they WERE younglings why wouldn't a parent grebe
be with them? She drew me a picture that certainly looks like a pied-billed
grebe (except for the crest). Marion has been birding for most of her life
and is a very observant person. She has been my birding mentor and was
instrumental in getting me into birding.
Does anybody out in Tweetsterland have a guess about the bird my friend
mentions in her letter? We would both appreciate some opinions that we could
look into.
