Hi All,

I've been LAX about sending a report to you all about the April trip my Mom
& I took to Texas this year. So here goes --- >

(Since my report has grown very long, I will send a condensed version now
and if you're interested send me a private email and I'll send you the much
longer story form report I've written.)

Mom and I spent nine days birding TEXAS HILL COUNTRY AND THE UPPER TEXAS
COAST. We flew into Houston on the 4th and out on the 14th.

WE had three full days in "Texas Hill Country", around Concan - this was our
first time there. We birded an area north of Sabinal; the Concan area,
especially River Road and Neal's Lodges; and Park Chalk Bluff near Uvalde.

Leaving there for Galveston Island, we stopped in San Antonio to look at the
Alamo. When we found "Riverwalk" to be right next door, we checked that
out too. Pretty cool. If you get the chance I'd say it is something you
shouldn't miss!

The rest of our time was spent at Galveston, especially East Beach; Bolivar
Flats; at Boy Scout Woods and Smith Oaks in High Island; at Anahuac NWR and
the rice fields nearby and at Sabine Woods and Sea Rim State Park, near Port
Arthur, TX.

On our second to last day there was a nasty thunderstorm that lasted a
couple hours and that evening AND the following morning we witnessed what
people were calling a "mini fallout." Warblers and other songbirds were
thick in the trees. It was fun to be standing there in one spot and hear
"There's a this!", "There's a that!" and "Look over there. . . .!"

Sabine Woods was a new spot for us and we both LOVED it there. And Sea Rim
SP offered another new environment for us to explore.

We put 1500+ miles on the rental car and ended up with a trip total of 195
species. I saw 19 new birds and Mom saw 18. I've been birding in
Washington for 15 years or so and have been to Texas three times and have
seen nearly as many birds there as here!!
