Tweets, Yesterday I led a small field trip from Tahoma Audubon. We headed out
to Elma, and checked out Vance cty Park,and adjacent ponds; finding nesting
osprey of course, green heron, singing Wilsons Warblers, and greater
scaup,were a few of the great birds in that area. We then hit Chehalis Refuge
we were greeted with a kettle of 15 TV,s (3 more later on)
with lots of ducks, including a brilliant Cinn. teal and mate,
bitterns pumping, and a common snipe sitting on top of a very tall snag!
At Bottle Beach we literally hit the jackpot;, a large number of Pacific
Golden plovers, semi palmated,, one western grebe, bonapartes gulls, western
sandpipers, lots of short billed dowitchers, sanderlings, good close looks at
red knots; and a merlin swooping down over the dowitchers, and these are only
the high light birds!!! Lots a great birds here and there on the way to O.S..
We had a great horned owl fly over the road late in the morning, as if someone
had disturbed his roost. This was next to
the county park. At the golf course we had several canadas, one greater white
fronted, and a hovering female kestral....At the Marina, which is now harder
to have access to,(not much parking) we had a single ruddy turnstone. Damon
Point,and pond, was great with pacific golden, and black bellied plovers, one
long billed curlew, several whimbrel,brant geese, least sandpipers,
and lots of sea birds. Pt. Brown gave us a wandering tattler, surfbird, and
several black turnstones, as well and pacific and common loon, and 2 scoter
species. We hit a few more spots as we headed out, and got to Brady loop as
the sun was setting. Dusky species of canadas were the highlight, along with
several regular canadas and a large number of greater white fronted geese; and
a pair of Kestrals checking us out.
Our total for the day was 101, and not one greater yellowlegs in the
bunch.......What a great day!!!!
