Sightings Wednesday, August 9


Two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, presumably the pair being seen at Blaine Harbour was observed in flight over the Serpentine Fen area of Surrey.


Nearby at Blackie Spit were 2 PURPLE MARTINS and a juvenile LONG-BILLED CURLEW.


The following were observed from the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty: the WILLET, a WHIMBREL, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 3 BLACK TURNSTONES and 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS.


The WILSON'S PHALAROPE was again reported from Reifel.


A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at Iona.


An OSPREY was seen hunting at Coquitlam's La Farge Lake.


Tuesday, August 8


A trip to Blackie Spit turned up 2 PURPLE MARTINS and a LONG-BILLED CURLEW.


Monday, August 7


The 2 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were again reported from Blaine Harbour, Washington.


At Blackie Spit were 1 LONG-BILLED CURLEW, 2 WHIMBREL and 5 PURPLE MARTINS.


Twenty-six PURPLE MARTINS were reported from Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver.


OSPREYS were reported from the Roberts Bank Jetty and Green Timbers Park.


Sunday, August 6

>From the end of the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty came the report of the following birds: RUDDY TURNSTONE, 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, and a SURFBIRD. Approx. ? way out the WILLET was observed.

>From the foot of 72nd at Boundary Bay came the report of a SHORT-EARED OWL.

Iona was the location for a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER.

The following birds were observed on the weekly Sunday morning bird walk at Reifel Refuge: a SOLITARY SANDPIPER, an AMERICAN BITTERN and a WILSON'S PHALAROPE.

Saturday, August 5

At Blackie Spit were a WHIMBREL, LONG-BILLED CURLEW and 2 PURPLE MARTINS.

The Tsawwassen Jetty had 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 3 BLACK TURNSTONE, 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, a WHIMBREL and a RUDDY TURNSTONE.

A pair of AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS was observed just south of the border in Blaine Harbour. Rumour has it these bird have been frequenting the area most of the summer.

Along Rannie Road enroute to Pitt Meadow's Grant Narrows RP were 12 EASTERN KINGBIRDS. At Grant Narrows was a TRUMPETER SWAN on the marsh.

Out of town birders on the hunt for CRESTED MYNAS should try their luck at Wylie & 1st in Vancouver.
