Sightings Sunday, August 13


Reported on a British Columbia Field Ornithologist field trip to Point Roberts were 2 HEERMAN'S GULLS, a WESTERN KINGBIRD, and a COMMON TERN. On the same field trip but from the Tsawwassen Jetty were the WILLET and a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER. Also reported from the Jetty today were a MARBLED GODWIT, 1 WHIMBREL, and a BLACK TURNSTONE.

>From west of 96th on the Boundary Bay Dike a juvenile WILSON'S PHALAROPE was sighted. Near the foot of 104th on the dike were 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and a singing WESTERN MEADOWLARK.

At Blackie Spit along with the usual LONG-BILLED CURLEW, were 4 PURPLE MARTINS and a GREEN HERON.

Seen on a hike up Mt. Cheam east of Chilliwack were 3 GREY-CROWNED ROSY FINCHES, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a pair of AMERICAN KESTREL.

An OSPREY was observed hunting on the Fraser east of Scott Road.


Saturday, August 12


Seen at Iona were 12 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPE.


On reports from the Tsawwassen Jetty came the sightings of 2 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS, 373 CASPIAN TERNS, and 2 HEERMAN'S GULLS.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was seen at the Beach Grove Lagoon in Tsawwassen.

Boundary Bay west of 96th near the mansion were 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

Heard in over flight at Hastings & Willingdon was a PURPLE MARTIN.


Friday, August 11

A MARBLED GODWIT, the WILLET and 5 BLACK OYSTAERCATCHERS were observed from the Tsawwassen Jetty.

At Blackie Spit was a LONG-BILLED CURLEW.

Iona was the location for a BANK SWALLOW, 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and 2 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

A MUTE SWAN was seen flying with a flock of CANADA GEESE in New Westminster over the Fraser River south of the Skytrain Bridge.

Thursday, August 10

Sightings reported from the Reifel Refuge were a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 6 SANDHILL CRANE, an AMERICAN BITTERN, a MERLIN and a PEREGRINE.

A GREEN HERON was seen in over flight near Taylor Way & Keith in West Vancouver.

A BLACK OYSTERCATCHER was reported from West Vancouvers Lighthouse Park.

Wednesday, August 9


Two AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS, presumably the pair being seen at Blaine Harbour was observed in flight over the Serpentine Fen area of Surrey.


Nearby at Blackie Spit were 2 PURPLE MARTINS and a juvenile LONG-BILLED CURLEW.


The following were observed from the Tsawwassen Ferry Jetty: the WILLET, a WHIMBREL, 1 MARBLED GODWIT, 3 BLACK TURNSTONES and 3 BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS.


A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen at Iona.


Out of town birders on the hunt for CRESTED MYNAS should try their luck at Wylie & 1st in Vancouver.
