I just got a report from John Beal that he's seeing martins at the turning
basin on the Duwamish, miles upstream of the T-105 nests. That area has lots
of old pilings with cavities, and I've also been seeing occasional martins
around Kellogg Island and T-105. I hope to visit the turning basin tonight,
in search of additional nests.
Last night at T-105 an adult osprey landed on the pilings adjacent to the
martins. An adult male martin wasted no time in scolding and harassing the
osprey, driving it away in seconds. I was in a kayak not far from the nest,
and at no time did the martins show any sign of alarm at my presence. One or
two martin nestlings could still be seen in the nest box entrances, peering
at the sky for the next parental visit. One male was often tending to both
boxes, and two females were also present to help.
