Subject: Fw: Fisheries Observer Position: Hawaii

Thought that some of the birders on the list might be interested in the
following fisheries observer positions. A number of former observers that
I've talked to have racked up some nice pelagic observations.....

Best,

Announcement:

MRAG Americas, Inc. is seeking qualified individuals interested in working
as a Hawaii-based pelagic longline observer. The Hawaii longline fishery
targets swordfish and tuna, and observers monitor incidental take of sea
turtles and other protected species.

Potential observers must:
? possess a Bachelor's degree in one of the biological sciences from an
accredited four-year college or university with at least 6 semester hours
in marine science or fisheries (or one year of specialized experience may
be substituted for these 6 semester hours,)
? have scientific field data collection experience,
? be certified by a physician as physically fit for work aboard pelagic
longline vessels, and
? be a U.S. citizen or a non-citizen who has legally resided in the U.S
continuously for at least the past 5 years.

Preferably, potential observers will also have:
? ocean experience aboard small vessels,
? previous experience as a marine mammal or fisheries observer,
? scientific data collection and data entry experience beyond college.

Having the ability to speak Vietnamese or Korean will be an advantage.

MRAG has designed and implemented fishery observer programs in the south
Atlantic (South Georgia), south west Indian Ocean (Prince Edward Islands),
central western Indian Ocean (British Indian Ocean Territory) and the
northwest Atlantic (NAFO Regulatory Area). The scope of these operations
varies, the largest being the NAFO program that provides approximately
7,000 observer-days a year. All are long running programs with high
levels of both observer and client satisfaction. In 1999/2000 MRAG also
conducted a detailed independent review of the North Pacific Groundfish
Observer Program, and is currently investigating the operational and
statistical aspects of the sampling in that program.
