This is the Vancouver, B.C. Bird Alert for Friday, August 18, 9:30am
Saturday update.

Sightings Friday, August 18

Reported from the Reifel Refuge were a WILSON'S PHALAROPE, an OSPREY and up
to 7 SANDHILL CRANES. One of the 7 is the newly fledged offspring of the
resident pair.

A MARBLED GODWIT, BLACK OYSTERCATCHER and the WILLET were seen from the
Tsawwassen Jetty.

An OSPREY was observed hunting near Barnstrom Island.

Thursday, August 17

A HEERMAN'S GULL was sighted at Spanish Banks in Vancouver.

Out of town at the Cheam Wetlands RP east of Chilliwack was a GRAY CATBIRD
seen near the old mining equipment display.

Wednesday, August 16

At Colony Farm a BARN OWL was observed successfully hunting bats.

The Boundary Bay dike near the Mansion west of 96th was the location for 4
RED KNOTS and 5 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES.

>From the Iona Jetty came the report of 75 COMMON TERNS. Also at Iona were a
juvenile RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and 2 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS.

The MARBLED GODWIT and a BLACK OYSTERCATCHER were reported from the
Tsawwassen Jetty.

Tuesday, August 15

A MERLIN was seen hunting shorebirds near the Mansion west of 96th on
Boundary Bay.

Sunday, August 13

Reported from Point Roberts were 2 HEERMAN'S GULLS, a WESTERN KINGBIRD, and
a COMMON TERN. Seen from the Tsawwassen Jetty were the WILLET, a BLACK
OYSTERCATCHER, a MARBLED GODWIT, 1 WHIMBREL, and 6 BLACK TURNSTONES.

>From west of 96th on the Boundary Bay Dike a juvenile WILSON'S PHALAROPE was
sighted. Near the foot of 104th on the dike were 2 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and
a singing WESTERN MEADOWLARK.

At Blackie Spit along with the usual LONG-BILLED CURLEW were a GREEN HERON,
and 4 PURPLE MARTINS, 2 adults and 2 juveniles.

Seen on a hike up Mt. Cheam east of Chilliwack were 3 GREY-CROWNED ROSY
FINCHES, a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and a pair of AMERICAN KESTREL.

An OSPREY was observed hunting on the Fraser east of Scott Road.

A BARRED OWL was seen at Campbell Valley Park.

Out of town birders on the hunt for CRESTED MYNAS should try their luck at
Wylie & 1st in Vancouver.
