December 6, 8:54 PM - Hi, this is Steven Mlodinow. This afternoon I found a
female TUFTED DUCK at the Everett Sewage Ponds. She was hanging out with a
small group of GADWALL at the edge of the CANVASBACK flock. As I walked
around the pond the CANVASBACK and GADWALL did their usual swimming slowly
away, not even bothering to lift their heads up. The TUFTED DUCK, however,
flew and did land in the north pond. This bird is fairly subtle. It has a
small tuft and typical TUFTED DUCK bill pattern. Perhaps the easiest way to
pick it out is that its sides are very pale contrasting with a dark back and
a dark chest. There is also very little white on the face. In flight the
bird has a very bright wing stripe that is even brighter than a GREATER
SCAUP. Otherwise, there were 340 CANVASBACK there. No sign of the LITTLE
GULL. Still somes "bonies" around. Good luck and good birding.
