Today my mother and I birded mainly at Ft.Canby S.P., with a few other
locations, with the highlight being the MOUNTAIN PLOVER, presumeably a
juvenal. on the beach, just due north of the jetty, as it foraged and
preened by itself during our entire visit between 9:30am-11:45am. A later
search for the bird after 11:45am, with extensive searching proved nothing
at the prior location, as the bird could have been hiding or blending in
with the surroundings, and with the presence of raptors including a Northern
Harrier, and 2 falcon species, probably made the bird very alert. We were
also accompanied by Todd Thornton of Oregon, as we all watched the bird, as
my mother obtained quality photographes at close range of about 8 feet. The
bird didn't seem too wary of our presence, as it was very approachable. The
weather was quite rewarding, with mostly cloudy to partly sunny skies, and
increasing wind(late), but NO rain, except on our drive through Olympia this
morning. Other notable highlights at Ft.Canby S.P. included:

6 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES

2 HERMIT THRUSHES

34 CANVASBACK were noted in the Port of Illwaco, among more common waterbird
species, and 4 TRUMPETER SWANS at Black Lake in Illwaco.

Along the east portion of Chinook Valley Rd. up to 4 adult WHITE-TAILED
KITES were observed in open fields, as it was rewarding to see them, being a
year bird for both of us. We also located several Elk, 1 Hairy Woodpecker,
and 2 adult NORTHERN SHRIKES along this route heading back to Hwy.101
towards home.

At Nemah, south of the Nemah River,along Hwy.101, a flock of shorebirds
foraging in a vegetated field at high tide, consisted of 82 GREATER
YELLOWLEGS, 1 SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER(heard and seen), and 18 LONG-BILLED
DOWITCHERS. Continuing further north at Bay Center, a quick check of Bay
Center Dike Rd., produced 4 EURASIAN WIGEON, 1 EUR.X AM.WIGEON, and 22
GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE, then another adult NORTHERN SHRIKE, just west
of South Bend along Hwy.101.

At 4pm we checked along the entire Brady Loop Rd., with just a few
highlights, despite the time of day, and lighting conditions including:

4 TUNDRA SWANS
1 male AM.KESTREL
2 MOURNING DOVES
