What a great topic! I'm with the folks who found the most excitement in
their own backyard: in July, a family (4 siblings) of Western Screech Owls
less than 1/4 mile up the inlet from my house. I heard them before I saw
them -- an odd, constant babble something like a cross between a squirrel
and a bird. By the time they were full grown and dispersed, they were
observed perched on parked cars and deck railings, after dark of course,
although they spent most of their time in the small patch of mature forest
where I first heard them.
