Subject: [Fwd: claimed sighting of Ivorybilled Woodpecker in Louisiana]

Actually this is not a new report. I was in New Orleans last September and
this rumor was floating around. The area where the bird was spotted
(allegedly) is only a half hour from downtown New Orleans. Apparently
there was considerable controversy around the report including personal
attacks on the character of the student reporting it. In any case I
decided to visit the area since what did I have to lose. Also the area is
a prime spot for Swainson's Warblers. Unfortunately when I arrived the
road was closed. It wasn't really the four mile hike that put me off. It
was the three separate lines of CAUTION-DO NOT CROSS tape over the road
including one at a bridge where it was not easy to walk around. So perhaps
I have missed my only chance at an Ivorybill. Then again maybe there was
no chance anyway.
