Dan,

You are correct that Upland Sandpiper has been extirpated as a
breeding bird in Washington. I can't remember what year the last birds
were seen on the prairie east of Spokane, but it was fairly recently.
I saw them there in 1975, and it saddens me to realize that they have
disappeared. They used to nest also on the Idaho side of the border
near Post Falls, but have disappeared there as well.

However, Upland Sandpipers have NOT yet been extirpated as a
breeding species in the Pacific Northwest. There are two valleys in
Grant County, Oregon-- Bear Valley and Logan Valley-- where Uplands
have nested for many years. I believe they have declined somewhat
recently, but are still present in both valleys.

Also, in June 1997, several observers (me included) saw 1 or 2
Upland Sandpipers over a period of several weeks in Round Valley,
Idaho, near the Cascade Reservoir (north of Boise). I don't know if
any have been seen there in subsequent years, but the place looks like
good breeding habitat to me.

Make no mistake, Upland Sandpipers are in deep trouble in the
Pacific Northwest. However, they aren't gone yet, and I hope they
never do disappear.

If anyone can provide updates on the status of Upland Sandpipers
in Idaho or Oregon, I and others would surely be interested.
