On January 17, 2000, Dennis Rockwell and Brent Ripley birded the Lost
Island habitat management unit on the Snake River in Franklin County above
Ice Harbor Dam. Among the 35 species seen were one GREAT-HORNED OWL, one
NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and in an adjacent wetland area they found two
VIRGINIA RAILS and a very surprising female COMMON YELLOW-THROAT.

Also on January 17, 2000, I saw a lone DUNLIN on the Yakima Delta, and on
January 18, 2000, my wife and I birded the south slope of Rattlesnake
Mountain where we observed two PRAIRIE FALCONS, a NORTHERN SHRIKE, and a
lone COMMON REDPOLL which remained briefly with several hundred HORNED
LARKS at the road side.

Also, on January 18, 2000, Ruth Fisher discovered a WINTER WREN in Columbia
Park along the Audubon nature trail in a tangle of vines near the raised
platform. A young man named Dan reported a group of six MEADOWLARKS in a
field above Columbia Park on January 24. An adult NORTHERN GOSHAWK was
seen briefly in Two Rivers Park by Dennis Rockwell on January 27.

On January 29, Dennis and Lorrie Ness birded the Big Flat habitat
management unit on the Snake River in Franklin County above Ice Harbor Dam
and found among the 36 species two FOX SPARROWS of the Slate-Colored race.
