Good morning Tweeters,

We're having an exceptionally sunny, mild winter in Ketchikan. Heard a
WINTER WREN singing the other day, and the BALD EAGLES are getting really
noisy -- keeping an eye on the nest sites in the area, but haven't seen any
nesting behavior yet.

My best bird encounter in a long time was a WESTERN SCREECH OWL. I was
giving my dog her last little walk of the evening, about 10:00 p.m.
Something flew, silently, from the ditch up to a low alder branch. I had a
flashlight, and there sat a beautiful little SCREECH OWL. He/she kept a
very close eye on Daisy, bending its head over to watch her pass right
below, but ignored me. Now I know what I have been hearing during the night
off and on for a long time, all year round -- the "bouncing ball"
description of the SCREECH OWL'S call fits.
