RARE BIRD SIGHTINGS:

Common Redpolls


Sunday, Feb. 13th
------------------------------------
At 10 am, 2 Common Redpolls were seen in the alders beside the Duncan golf
driving range. The birds could not be relocated in the afternoon. This
species is quite rare in the Victoria checklist area, and should be looked
for with either Pine Siskins, or American Goldfinches. They like feeding on
the cattails of the alder trees.

Also today, 2 Ancient Murrelets were seen at Jordan River.

A lone Turkey Vulture was over Fort Rod hill national park.


Saterday, Feb. 12th

A VNHS fieldtrip to Boundary Bay and Reifel Bird Sancturary produced 4
species of owls, including several Long and Short-eared owls. Snow buntings
and a Willet were also among the interesting species seen.

Locally on Saterday, 5 Barn Swallows were over Cowichan bay, and an
unconfirmed report of 3 Violet-green swallows seen last Thursday, also over
Cowichan bay.

2 Western Meadowlarks were near the Dock road there.

The Tundra swan remains with Trumpeter swans along Zuhalton Rd, which is
off Boise Rd south of Duncan.

The American tree sparrow and the Harris's sparrow seen in this area for
the past month could not be located Saterday, but are likely still there.


Friday, Feb. 11th.

Thursday, Feb. 10th
------------------------------------
3 Barn Swallows were over Cowichan bay.

On Tuesday, Feb. 8th
------------------------------------
6 Turkey Vultures were over Wishart Rd. in Colwood.

An unconfirmed Northern Roughwinged swallow was with Tree swallows at
Cowichan bay., and 3 Tree swallows and 2 barn swallows were over Somenos
marsh north of Duncan.

A Rusty Blackbird was at the Duncan Feed mill on the west side of the
Island Highway in Duncan on Feb. 7th.

And an American Kestrel was last reported on Feb. 6th from the NE corner of
the Victoria airport.
