Visiting the Old Fishing Hole in Kent today, my niece noticed a large bird
sitting in a tree near the totem pole. We walked closer and, to our joy and
delight, recognized it as a merlin! We got as close as we could without
disturbing him and got such a good close look both with and without binocs.
He sat watching us for a long time then soared away. What a treat! Not a
lifer for me but the closest I've ever seen one.
We also saw a lovely bewick's wren while eating sausage biscuits at the
McDonald's on 320th in Federal Way.
